New Zealand v Australia: first T20 international – Today!

New Zealand v Australia: first T20 international – Today!

New Zealand (NZ) and Australia (AUS) will go face-to-face on Monday (February 22) in the 1st of the 5-match T20I series. Aussies are currently leading by 7-2 against Kiwis in terms of head-to-head battle.

WICKET! Maxwell c Neesham b Southee 1 (5), Australia 19-4

That’s straight out of the Brendon McCullum school of captaincy! Williamson has learned from his sensei well. Fifth over of a T20 International, and New Zealand have two slips in place and an opening bowler sending down the third of his allotment of four. Go for the win from the start. It works, too. This is New Zealand, so Southee is still getting swing, and it moves away from Maxwell who tries a powerful off-drive. Edged, and Neesham at second slip comes across first slip to claim it.

4th over: Australia 18-3 (Marsh 0, Maxwell 1) Maxwell to the middle early after all. Boult gives him a couple back of a length, and he hops up to defend, then to get a single away through point. Marsh leaves Boult as the ball angles across. Happy to see off the main bowler, after Wade scooped the first ball of the over for six, then got out from the second ball.

New Zealand will go head-to-head with Australia on Monday (February 22) in the 1st of the 5-match T20I series at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The match is scheduled to begin at 11.30 PM IST. Follow live cricket score and updates from the 1st T20I here.

1.45 PM: WICKET! Australia are now 3-wicket down following the dismissal of Mathew Wade. Trent Boult strikes once again. He has got two now. 'Big Show' Glenn Maxwell has walked into the crease. The visitors are 18-3 after 4 overs.

1.36 PM: WICKET! No dream debut for Josh Philippe tonight. He has gone after scoring just 2 from 3 balls. NZ bowlers Southee and Boult have now got one wicket each in their opening overs. The Aussies are in trouble. They are 9/2 after 2 overs. Mitchell Marsh is now at the crease, joining Wade.

1.30 PM: WICKET! Big wicket for New Zealand as skipper Finch has gone to the pavilion in the very opening over. Debutant Josh Philippe has now walked down into the middle. The visitors are 3/1 after 1.1 overs.

The chase is underway as Aaron Finch and Mathew Wade are in the middle. Tim Southee is set to open the Kiwi attack.

1.17 PM: Tough task is ahead for Finch & Co. against Kiwi bowlers. They need to start big to chase down the total against Trent Boult, Kyle Jamieson and others. We'll come back shortly with the Australian chase. Can Josh Phillipe fire on his debut? The second innings is coming up in 15 mins.

1.13 PM: A Devon Conway show at Christchurch today in the 1st innings as the 29-year-old has missed his century by a run. He has hit 10 fours and 3 massive sixes. New Zealand are 184/5 after 20 overs.

1.08 PM: Conway has now entered into 80s. Can he get his 100 in the 20th over? NZ are 167/5 after the 19th.

1.03 PM: Kane Richardson, Australia's death-over specialist, is set to bowl two of the final three overs of the innings but Conway has got the upper hand over Richardson in the 18th. He is now at 72* from 49 deliveries. NZ are 151/5 after 18 overs.

12.58 PM: WICKET! A quickfire innings from Jimmy Nesham comes to an end after scoring 26 runs from 15 balls. Jhye Richardson has got the wicket. NZ are 141/5 after 17 overs.

12.53 PM: Well, Well Well! Looks like Jimmy Neesham is in the mood today. The Kiwi all-rounder has already scored 21 runs in just 12 balls, with a blistering strike rate of 175. NZ are 132/4 after 16 overs.

12.49 PM: The Kiwis are eyeing a strong finish to post a respective total on the board. However, a wicket of well-set Devon Conway is crucial for the Aussies. The host are 121/4 after 15.2 Overs.

12: 37 PM: Conway reaches half-century! He has brought New Zealand back in the game with a counter-attack in the last 30 mins. He has reached his fifty off 36 balls and the Kiwis would want him to bat till the end in order to reach a big total.

12: 28 PM: Conway is on fire at the moment. He is smashing Australian bowlers to all parts of the ground. This has been a brilliant comeback from the Kiwis.

12: 20 PM: Both the batsmen are trying their best to up the tempo for New Zealand. Given the firepower in Australian batting, New Zealand need a big total on board.

12: 11 PM: Glenn Phillips and Devon Conway are in the process of rebuilding the innings. After 7 overs, New Zealand are 38/3. It remains to be seen whether these two can get going for another 4 to 5 overs.

11: 59 PM: WICKET! Sams has struck again, he has removed the Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson. Williamson was looking to play a pulll shot but got an edge and the keeper did the rest of the job behind the wickets. New Zealand are 19/3 now.

New Zealand 15/2 after 3 overs

Jyhe Richardson and Danile Sams have got the Australians off to a good start. While Sams got the first breakthrough to send Martin Guptill back in the hut, Richardson, who made headlines in the recently concluded IPL 2021 auction, has removed Tim Seifert.

Aaron Finch's side have comfortably won their last three meetings against the Black Caps in the T20I format. All three matches were played in 2018. However, this is a completely different New Zealand side who have strengthened in every possible department since then under the leadership of Kane Williamson.

The likes of Kyle Jamieson, Trent Boult, Tim Seifert and Martin Guptill will be key for the Kiwis to win the series.

Australia, on the other hand, have produced some finest young pacers from their domestic circuit in recent years. Jhye Richardson, who was sold to Punjab Kings for a whooping Rs.14 Crore in the IPL Auction a few days ago, will be crucial for Finch & Co. to emerge victorious on Monday.

This is expected to be a neck-to-neck encounter between two of the heavyweights of the sport.
