Virgin Media down as thousands of broadband customers couldn’t get online

People across the UK are suffering from broadband issues after Virgin Media appeared to go down.

More than 2,200 users reported problems with their internet service on the outage tracker website Down Detector. The problem appeared to start at around 8am and comes as millions continue to work from home due to the pandemic. Virgin Media confirmed it was aware of a ‘fault’, which lasted for around an hour and has now been fixed.

At around 8am this morning more than 1,400 users reported problems with broadband and mobile phone internet on the Down Detector website.

The problems seem to have hit Brits across the country, with reports coming from Glasgow, Cambridgeshire, Manchester, Brighton and London.

Some have said they can't access the service page on the Virgin Media website where you can check for issues in their area.

Shortly before 10am the problem was fixed, a Virgin Media spokesperson said.

While in normal times lack of internet might simply be annoying, working from home during the pandemic means its a real issue for some.

One man wrote on Twitter: "Hey @virginmedia I have an important online meeting to attend and my wifi isn’t working. Help please."

Another added: "My broadband is pumped today but your site says no faults?

"Definitely something wrong as nothing is working. Nightmare as I’ve got work to do."

One exasperated man claimed this was just one in a long line of issues he has had with the media company.

"What is going on with our home broadband!?" he asked Virgin Media.

"Promised 100mb, not had a week without performance issues or outages. Promises of support never come through.

"So disappointing.. help!"

If they can get online, Virgin Media users can find out if there are any problems in their area by visiting the My Virgin service update website.

One user tweeted: ‘Hi what’s going on! My internet is completely down…are you having issues? Need to know as I’m working from home. Please can you respond urgently.’ Another wrote: ‘Any news on the outages? I can’t connect to work, websites are loading painfully slow. Downdetector showing many reports around the country.’ A third added: ‘Hey @virginmedia I have an important online meeting to attend and my wifi isn’t working. Help please.’ It’s unclear which areas were affected or exactly how many customers were unable to get online.

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “The issue which affected some customers’ broadband services this morning has now been fixed. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
