KKR vs MI: Rahul Chahar, Trent Boult help Heroics Mumbai by 152 runs against Kolkata

Mumbai Indians pulled off a miraculous victory against Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 5 of the Indian Premier League 2021 to get off the mark this season in Chennai on Tuesday.

Defending a below-par score of 152, MI rode on superb bowling performances from their spinners Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya to restrict KKR to 142 for 7 in 20 overs.

KKR had got off to a great start with Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana scoring 72 runs in less than 9 overs but it all went downhill in the middle overs when the spinners came in to bowl.

The win was MI's 22nd over KKR in the IPL and third in succession since last year. They have now won 12 out of the last 13 IPL matches against KKR. This was also MI's first victory this season after the season-opening defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 9.

Gill got out for 33 off 24 balls but Rana continued from where he left in the last match, scoring 57 runs off 47 balls for the Knight Riders but even then the 2-time champions couldn't get over the finish line as they choked in the death overs thanks to Rohit Sharma's brilliant captaincy.

Chahar and Krunal shared 5 wickets between them as KKR collapsed from 104 for 2 to 122 for 5, losing 3 wickets for 18 runs in the middle overs. Chahar bagged 4 wickets for 27 from his 4 overs while Krunal picked 1 for 13 from his full quota. Boult defended 13 runs in the final over, picking up 2 wickets off successive balls to win the match for his team.

Earlier, KKR rode on a five-wicket haul from all-rounder Andre Russell to bowl Mumbai out for 152 in 20 overs after they elected to field first at Chepauk.

Russell became the second bowler to take a five-for against MI this season after Harshal Patel as he bagged 5 for 15 in just 2 overs to help restrict the defending champions to a below-par score. No bowler had managed to take 5 wickets against MI before this season and now 2 have achieved the feat in successive games.

Russell recorded the best bowling figures by a KKR bowler in the IPL, surpassing Sunil Narine's 5 for 19 against Kings XI Punjab in Kolkata in 2012. His figures are also the best by any bowler against the defending champions in the IPL.

Russell bowled the 18th and the 20th over in the first innings and picked up the wickets of Kieron Pollard (5), Krunal Pandya (15), Marco Jansen (0), Rahul Chahar (8) and Jasprit Bumrah (0) to dent the five-time champions after they were asked to bat first by KKR skipper Eoin Morgan.
